A Brief Introduction of Hainan University

Hainan University, officially established in August 2007 with the approval of the Ministry of Education, is a national key comprehensive university. It is the merger of both the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture (SCUTA), and the former Hainan University (HU). As one of the national “211 Project” universities, it is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial Government.
 
The university runs three campuses, namely Haidian, Chengxi, and Danzhou. Its main campus is located on Haidian Island of Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Province. The Haidian Campus is nestled along the coast of the South China Sea. Sourounding lakes, long coconut leaves fluttering in refreshing sea breezes, and fragrant tropical flora help create a beautifull tropic sight and an ideal place for learning. Danzhou Campus is located in Danzhou City, west of Hainan Province, and well known for being “The hometown of poetry in a sea of songs”. Chengxi Campus is also west of Haikou. The total area of the three campuses covers 741 acres. What’s more, the library contains more than 3,035,000 books on different subjects, among which 1,970,000 are paper back, while the other 1,065,000 are electronic.  
 
The university is the proud home to a high-level team of full-time faculty and staff made up of 1,400 full-time faculties, including over 760 professors and associate professors. Programs covering 8 categories of disciplines in philosophy,economics, law, literature, natural sciences,agriculture,engineering,and management are offered.. The above categories then fall into 4 major academic divisions: Tropical Agriculture and Life Science Engineering,Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, the Humanities, and Social Sciences.. The university hosts 20 colleges, three general education divisions,a state key discipline, two key disciplines of the Ministry of Agriculture,10 provincial key disciplines,three key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, two Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education,five provincial key laboratories, and two provincial Engineering Centers. It offers a post-doctoral research station, 11 doctoral programs, 74 master's programs, 68 undergraduate programs, and 7 state-class specialized courses and two state-class elaborate courses.
 
The university has extensive international academic exchanges and cooperation. Currently, the university has signed agreements on academic cooperation and exchanges with more than 60 well-known overseas universities and institutions from more than 20 countries and regions including France, Singapore, Russia, and Taiwan. Each year outstanding undergraduates and graduates are selected to further their studies at these universities. As one of the 22 Chinese Education Bases in China with the approval of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, the university has cultivated thousands of foreign students so far.
 
In 2008 Hainan Universities Collage of International Culture Exchange obtained approval of HSK from the Office of Chinese Language Council , which makes taking the HSK test very convenient for the foreign students and other foreigners.. This will help to promote a more rapid and sound educational development for international students at Hainan University!

A Brief Introduction of
College of International Cultural Exchange (CICE)
In September 1996, the Ministry of Education authorized Hainan University to enroll foreign students. Ever since then, thousands of foreign students from nearly 30 countries and regions have studied Chinese here. In June 2006, with the support of the university leadership and the overseas Chinese associates, the College of International Cultural Exchange (CICE) was founded.
 
More than 85% of the teachers have obtained the Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language Certificate authorized by the National Ministry of Education. The teachers are well-known for flexible methods and offer a rich teaching experience.
The CICE is in charge of the enrollment, teaching, international cooperation, international communications, and the management of all the foreign students at our university. The CICE specializes in running the International Students’ Office and houses the full-time staff who manage and serve the foreign students from all around. With the purpose of increasing the friendship between the Chinese people and people from all around the world, the college enrolls all kinds of foreign students through promoting the cultural and technological communication with one another. These students include both long-term and short-term Chinese language learners, undergraduate and postgraduate students of different disciplines, and short-term Chinese Language Training, etc. The Chinese language learners are mainly streamed into four levels: beginners, elementary (A, B, C), intermediate and advanced according to their Chinese proficiency. In addition, we offer HSK tutorial classes, and short term courses including: Chinese history, Chinese painting and calligraphy, martial arts (shadow boxing), Peking opera and Hainan opera as well.
 
    The college will continue to make great efforts to develop Chinese education worldwide by taking effective measures to explore a unique way of attracting more international students to study at Hainan University, and make full use of the advantageous location of Hainan. We will actively reach out to establish relationships with overseas universities and welcome them to visit our university in order to seek bilateral or multilateral cooperation with the pattern of “going out” and “coming in”. .Chinese Language and Culture
Long-term Programs: Chinese Language and Culture (Elementary Level A, Elementary Level B, Elementary Level C, Intermediate Level, and Advanced Level), and Elective Courses that include Chinese History, Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Military Arts, Shadow Boxing, and Peking Opera Arts, to name a few.
 
Short-term Programs: In order to enhance the cultural communication between China and foreign countries, Hainan University carries out short-term programs of different kinds for international students all the year round. We Warmly welcome delegations, groups of colleges and universities, or institutions from any country to come to Hainan University and participate in the short-term study programs. We will adjust the curriculum to meet the group’s specific needs and time requirements.
Classes on Testing Techniques in HSK are available for international students at any time.

The college runs a mobile research station for the post-doctors in First Class Discipline---Crop Science, and owns authorization of doctoral degree in First Class Discipline---Crop Science. There’re seven authorizations of doctoral degree in Second Class Discipline---Crop Genetics and Breeding, Crop Cultivation and Farming System, Plant Molecular Genetics, Germplasm Resources, Agricultural Biological Technology, Science and Technology of Rubber, and Energy Botany.

Plant Protection was chosen as one of the special majors at the national level, and the Plant Protection Teaching and Demonstration Center was ranked among the Teaching and Demonstration Center at the provincial level. Entomology is the elaborate course of provincial level. Plant Pathology, Agriculture Entomology and Pest Control, and Ecology are key disciplines of Hainan University.
 
College of Ocean Sciences:
Majors for Undergraduate students include :Aquiculture, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Ocean Science.
Majors for Master applicants:Aquiculture, Ocean Science and Agricultural Popularization in the field of fishery.
There’re the Marine Organisms Teaching and Experiment Centers, and Tropical Organisms Resources Lab of the Ministry of Education level, covering Lab of Marine Animals Breeding and Diseases Control, Lab of Germplasm Improvement of Marine Animals, and the Lab of Marine Organisms Research. In addition, there’s a provincial key lab --- Lab of Tropical Hydrobiology.

This division consists of five colleges: College of Materials and Chemical Engineering, College of Food Science, and College of Civil Engineering, College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, and College of Information Science and Technology.

Professor Yang Zhenning, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, and Academician Bai Chunli, famous scientist of nano material and vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences, are all visiting professors of the college.

International Admissions
I. Admission Requirements
1.      The candidate should be aged 18 or older, healthy, and self-dependent.
 
2. The candidate should have good character, abide by the laws of the Chinese Government, observe the regulations of Hainan University, and respect the Chinese traditional customs and culture.
 
3. The requirement for Chinese language and culture programs is according to the provisions listed above.
 
4. The candidate can study undergraduate programs at Hainan University on the condition that he/she has obtained a high school certificate and can show the official transcript of their grades. The candidate can study graduate programs at Hainan University on the condition that he/she has completed his/her undergraduate studies and obtained a bachelor’s degree, as wells as recommendation letters from two programs at Hainan University on condition that he/she has completed his/her graduate studies and obtained master’s degree, and recommendation letters from two experts (professor or associate professor).
 
5. Requirements for language:
 
(1).The candidate for undergraduate programs should be capable of studying his/her specialized courses in Chinese. They can apply for admission of undergraduate to Hainan University after having completed Band 4 of the HSK.. If he/she is not capable of studying his/her specialized courses in Chinese, he/she ought to study Chinese for a period of time in order to obtain the certificate of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK Band 6), and then can resume his/her undergraduate studies.
 
(2). The graduate and doctoral candidates should be capable of studying his/her specialized courses in Chinese. They can apply for undergraduate admission to Hainan University (HSK Band 4 and HSK Band 6 at graduation); and also must obtain the certificate of English Test (IELTS 6.5), (TOEFL iBT 75) (applicants from non-English speaking countries)
 
II. Successful Application
 
1. Semester arrangements:
Hainan University has two semesters in each academic year and two vacations.
(1), Fall semester: Sep.1st – Jan. 15th (winter vacation starts from late January to the end of February)
 
(2), Spring semester: March 1st –July. 15th (summer vacation begins in mid-July to the end of August)

(1) Application Form for Admission to Hainan University (Be sure to complete all sections of the application form. Incomplete or inaccurate forms cannot be processed. Make sure you submit the application fee with your application).
(2) Duplicated copies of applicants highest certificate of schooling and academic record. A letter of recommendation from an expert is needed if the applicant applies for graduate programs.
(3) Copy of Passport

4. Formalities for Visa to China
After receiving the Letter of Admission and the “Visa Application for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China” (JW 202 Form), applicants must take a physical examination in a hospital designated by the Chinese Embassy before the semester. Together with the Letter of Admission, JW 202 Form and Physical Examination Record, applicants can go to the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate for a visa application.
 
5. Registration:
(1) Students should arrive at the time stated on their “Letter of Admission”.
(2) When completing the registration at Hainan University, students are requested to show their Letter of Admission, JW202 Form, Physical Examination Record, Passport, and 10 passport photos. Upon registration, students are also required to pay the tuition, the registration, and the lodging fees for one term. No refund is available for withdrawal.
(3) After all the procedures are finished, students can begin classes.

IV. Travel
Hainan province is the most famous and unique tropical tourist resort in China. Located in the southern-most tip of China, Hainan Island is entitled the “Oriental Hawaii”. It has a tropical marine monsoonal climate with an annual average temperature of 22-26°C. Sunlight, surfing, beach, coconut palms, famous historical sites constitute a picturesque tropical landscape. Hainan is also rich in the cultures and customs of the minorities known as Li and Miao living in compact communities. Hainan University warmly welcomes international students to Hainan Island to enjoy the beautiful tropical and coastal landscape as well as experience the cultures of the local people. Hainan University can arrange round-the-island tours for foreign students allowing them to enjoy the beautiful,tropical,coastal landscape and learn some of the local customs and folklore.Students are required to pay the cost for the tour.
Foreign students must have a proper visa and a residence permit to travel within the areas where foreigners are allowed to travel.Without special authorization or for research needs,students may not travel to the areas which are restricted to foreigners. When you travel in China make sure to have your passport and student ID cards safely with you..You will also need to obtain a letter of recommendation from your department of study to process this special authorization. Those who transgress these regulations will be punished accordingly.
Students are only permitted to travel during weekends,holidays,and winter and summer vacations.
