Wudangzhao Monastery

Wudangzhao Monastery is located in Wudanggou Channel, which is about 70 kilometers away to the northeast of Baotou. It is the biggest and the most intact Tibetan style Lama temple till now in Inner Mongolia. ‘Wudang’ means willow in Mongolian. Because of the abundant growth of the willows at Wudanggou Channel the temple is called Wudangzhao.


The entire monastery is built at the foot of the mountain. It was a large scale construction with an area of 200,000 square meters and has 2538 rooms. At its most prosperous time, there were more than 1200 lamas in the temple.


The Tibetan style construction of the monastery is similar to the style of Tashilumpo Monastery in Tibet and is attractive. . All the palaces, halls and rooms in the monastery are constructed in the traditional Tibetan style. In the monastery, there are many lections in Tibetan language and most precious art treasures such as the figures of Buddha and the murals made of gold, silver, bronze, wood and mud.

How to Get to: Take bus from the square in front of Baotou East Railway Station. The driving time is about 4 hours.
