UNFPA meeting discusses social development and education
PANAMA CITY, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) held a meeting here on Monday to discuss issues on social development and education in the region, United Nations (UN) resident coordinator in Panama Jose Eguren said.
Eguren said it was a programming meeting being held every five years in different regions in the world to discuss issues related to the reproduction, reproductive sexual health, youth and protection against HIV-AIDS.
"The intention is to achieve wanted pregnancy in the youth and wanted, health and medically possible births, and all the youth to have access to the appropriated education all that based in the principals of the human rights" Eguren said.
The event was inaugurated by Panamanian Acting Foreign MinisterRicardo Duran, who hailed the UNFPA work on human development.
"Events like this, near to our Latin American surrounding, let us see a bigger coherence in the system as well as a better practical integration between their different elements, each time more oriented to assist the poverty problems in the region," Duran said.
High level officers from the UNFPA in Latin America attended the event, including UNPFA executive director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid.
