Curriculum of Chinese Language Training Center
Chinese Language Training Center enrolls two types of students
A. Long-term student: This type of students will mainly study basic Standard Chinese. This period of schooling varies from 1-3years.Students are taught according to their Chinese language level (elementary, intermediate, advanced). Upon completion of the Approach to Xiaoling of the Ming Dynastyprogram, an examination is administered. Those who pass this examination will be issued a Study Certificate, and will be eligible to enroll in a regular undergraduate program.
B. Short-term student: This type of student will receive intensive training in Standard Chinese over a short period of time, usually less than one year. The aim is to enable students to learn enough Chinese for daily living in China. Special course are offered based on the specific needs and requests of students.
The Center offers two types of classes
A. Required Course Programs:
1. Elementary Chinese-These course are for students who have no prior knowledge of Chinese. At present, we use the newest textbooks in China-(Duiwai Hanyu Benke Xilie Jiaocai) published by the Chinese Language and Culture University.
2. Intermediate Chinese-Students in these course also use Duiwai Hanyu Benke Xilie Jiaocai(second-year text), but these texts are often supplemented with additional materials like Intermediate Chinese Listening and Speaking to broaden the scope of their knowledge and to improve their communication skills.
3. Advanced Chinese-Students in these courses also use Duiwai Hanyu Benke Xilie Jiaocai. If needed, special textbooks like Speaking Chinese ,Talking About Culture or Business Chinese are also used.
B. Optional Course:
1. Calligraphy: Introducing the original and aesthetic meaning of Chinese characters and appreciating the deep meaning of Chinese calligraphy.
2. Histroy and Cultrue: Introducing the magnificent culture and long history of China.Xuanwu Lake
Martial Art: A window for foreign students learning about China, at the same time improves students' health.
3. Guidance class for Chinese Level Exam: On the request of students, this special guidance class is offered to help students assess their Chinese ability after Chinese study ,and prepare them for further studies or special occupations.

Prospectus for Non-degree Students

A. Student for advanced studies, senior students for advanced studies, short-term students:
All of the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs are qualified to enroll the three types of students.
B. language student:
This type of student will study Chinese at the Chinese Language Training Center. Please see IV (Curriculum of Chinese Language Training Center) to get detailed information.
C. Visiting schoal:
The above postgraduate and doctorate programs are qualified to enroll this type of student.

Requirements of Enrollment
Those in good health, ready to abide by Chinese laws, decrees and the university regulations, and those who willing to respect Chinese customs and habits can apply based on their own needs.

HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi):Chinese Level Exam
Applicants for undergraduate programs in Science and Engineering disciplines whose HSK exam score does not meet the requirements can enroll in one year preparatory courses with their high school academic records and their HSK exam score. Upon passing an exam after the one-year courses, they can be admitted as formal students.
Those applying for programs taught in English are not required to take the HSK exam.

Application Procedures
The applicants shall write to the International Exchange Office of Changsha University of Science & Technology for the “Application Form for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China at CUST” and the “Physical Examination Record for Foreigners” which shall be completed and then with photocopy of passport mailed or E-mailed back to the university. The university will send the qualified applicants a Visa Application Form (JW202 Form) and CUST Admission Notice. The applicants shall apply for the students (x) or (F, if less than 6 months) visa by presenting these two documents at the Chinese embassy or consulate.

B. The following documents shall be provided by students working for their
master's or doctor's degree:
1. Application Form for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China at CUST (photocopy)
2. Certificate of the highest academic degree earned (photocopy)
3. Physical Examination Record for Foreigners (photocopy)
4. Academic records of the highest degree earned (original)
5. HSK exam record (original)
6. Recommendation letters from two professors (original)
C. The following documents shall be provided by general and senior students for advanced studies:

When to pay the tuition: Pay it at one time at the beginning of the school year.

Tuition for Short-term Students:
Within 1 month:1100RMB yuan /person
2 to 3 month: 3,300 RMB yuan /person
4 to 6 month: 6600 RMB yuan /person
Remarks: If study is for no more than 1 month, one must pay for 1 month. (e.g. if study is for 3 weeks, which is more than 1 month, and less than 2 months, one must pay tuition for 2 whole months ). Others shall be charged according to this regulation.
Over 6 months and within 1 year|(not belong to short-term students): in accordance with the same standard of the students or senior students for advanced studies.
The tuition for the short-term language students is in accordance with the same standard of the short-term students. The tuition for the long-term language students(who study for over half a year)is in accordance with the standard of the students for advanced studies.
Moreover, those specialties and course classes that are taught in English are 20-30% above the standard.

Entry Dates and Registration Procedures
A. The academic year consists of two long-term semesters in spring and autumn and one short-term semester in summer. Long-term semesters focus on class teaching and study, short-term semesters focus on practice.
Long-term semester in autumn starts in early September and ends in January of the following year.
Long-term semester in spring starts in late February and ends in early July.
Short-term semester follows closely the Long-term semester in spring. It is generally 3-6 weeks long.
The arrangement of semesters is subject to minor variations.
B. Applicants for professional, undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. specialties should start the application process three months before the semester commences; applicants for professional and undergraduate specialties should enter the university at the beginning of the long-term semester in autumn; Applicants for graduate and PhD. Specialties can enter the university at the beginning of one of the long-term semesters. However special cases are not confined by this deadline. Other types of students and visiting scholars can apply, enter, and visit the university at any time.
C. Please take the following documents to International Exchange Office of CUST for registration as soon as get to CUST:
1. Student (X) Visa to China
2. CUST Administration Notice
3. JW202 Form (original)
4. Physical Examination Record for Foreigners (original)
5. Blood Test Report for HIV and Syphilis (original)
6. Eight copies of personal photo (one inch)
D. Within one month after arrival, the student should go to the Changsha Sanitation & Anti-epidemic Bureau for a health checkup. After the student has received the Qualification Certificate, they must go to the Changsha Municipal Pubic Security Bureau for the Residence Permit for Foreigners.

Study and Living Conditions
CUST has a stable study environment and a Chinese-speaking environment as well as nice establishments and conditions. The university is organized ,well-managed , and has systemic and perfect managing measures and responsible administrators. The university offers all sorts of large, middle and small-size classrooms for class study and self-study.
There are two types of accommodations for students:
A. A single room suite on campus possess an air conditioner, color TV, fridge, furniture, telephone, kitchen and toilet: 33 RMB yuan/person/day.
B. A double room suite possess an air conditioner, color TV, fridge, furniture, telephone, kitchen and toilet: 58 RMB yuan/suite/month.

Degree and Study Certificate
A. Qualified students working for a degree will be granted an official graduation certificate authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Those who meet all the requirements of degree application and granting stipulated by the People's Republic of China will be conferred a corresponding bachelor, master's or doctor's degree.
B. Upon completion of academic studies , qualified non-degree students will receive a study certificate or corresponding document.
