Dear students, are you happy with the coming day-off on Dragon Boat Festival next week? Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival which is celebrated on 5^th May of lunar calendar. Dating from a very ancient tribe, this day is a good time to climb the mountain and enjoy the sun, so it is also called Duanwu Festival. However, during the Warring State Period, a great pariotic poet Qu Yuan, drowned himself on Miluo River on 5th, May. From then on, this day became a festival to memory this great poet.

Some Customs

Dragon Boat Racing

赛龙舟.jpg The most interesting thing in this festival is Dragon Boat Racing. At very beginning, when Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, many fishermen went to salvage him with their boats. And this behavior develops into dragon boat racing now in memorial of Qu Yuan. 23 people join the racing. They seat themselves on the dragon-like boat and drive the boat to the terminal point. The fastest team win the game.

Eating Zongzi

On this day, eating Zongzi is also another custom with long history. This wonderful food is made of rice. However, its filling varies. A piece of meat, a piece of jujube or even a spoon of sugar can add some taste to Zongzi. It is wrapped by palma leaves and made into many shapes with edges and corners. At beginning, people threw Zongzi into waters to feed the fish in case they ate the body of Qu Yuan. And this custom develops with time. Nowadays, people eat different kinds of Zongzi.

On Dragon Boat Festival, Drinking Xionghuang Wine is also a must for this day. According to the tales, when Qu Yuan threw himself into the water, an old doctor brought a bottle of Xionghuang Wine and poured it into the river. It was said that in this way could the Dragon Fish be killed and it would not eat Qu Yuan's body. From then on, people have the tradition to drink Xionghuang Wine on this day.
