By admin on 2015-02-02

On 23 and 24 of June, 2011, a China Day was held in Kent Staplehurst Primary School. Students in Year 6 took part in this event designed to introduce Chinese culture to children.

Two teachers, Tang Xing from SSAT Confucius Classroom and Chen Xiaolian from BC exchange program, carefully organized colorful and various activities. The whole event was made up of six sessions, including a general introduction of China, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese knotting, traditional paper folding and cutting, chinaware design and a competition of using chopsticks.

These activities won popularity among the students and they took an active part in them. The students learnt about China and her culture through the interesting event, in which they had a dip in Chinese culture and felt its unique charm. In the first session, a general introduction of China, the children learnt about the history and geography about this country in the form of a quiz. They also learnt some useful everyday Chinese. In the second session, Chinese calligraphy, the kids learnt about the origin, structure of Chinese characters and the way to write them. They even tried using Chinese writing brush to create their own calligraphy works. The students also learnt how to make Chinese traditional handicrafts and finally they joined with great interest in a competition of using chopsticks.

Elliot, a boy student in Year 6, was really impressive. When he was doing the chinaware design, he asked Mr. Tang how to say and write "prosperity" in Chinese. And then he wrote "China, Peace and Prosperity" on his plate.
