University Profile
An imperial edict issued in 1896 by Emperor Guangxu, established Nanyang Public School in Shanghai. The normal school, school of foreign studies, middle school and a high school were established. Sheng Xuanhuai, the person responsible for proposing the idea to the emperor, became the first president and is regarded as the founder of the university.
During the 1930s, the university gained a reputation of nurturing top engineers. After the foundation of People's Republic, some faculties were transferred to other universities. A significant amount of its faculty were sent in 1956, by the national government, to Xi'an to help build up Xi'an Jiao Tong University in western China. Afterwards, the school was officially renamed Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Since the reform and opening up policy in China, SJTU has taken the lead in management reform of institutions for higher education, regaining its vigor and vitality with an unprecedented momentum of growth. SJTU includes five beautiful campuses, Xuhui, Minhang, Luwan Qibao, and Fahua, taking up an area of about 3,225,833 m2. A number of disciplines have been advancing towards the top echelon internationally, and a batch of burgeoning branches of learning have taken an important position domestically.
Today SJTU has 31 schools (departments), 63 undergraduate programs, 250 masters-degree programs, 203 Ph.D. programs, 28 post-doctorate programs, and 11 state key laboratories and national engineering research centers.
SJTU boasts a large number of famous scientists and professors, including 35 academics of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, 95 accredited professors and chair professors of the "Cheung Kong Scholars Program" and more than 2,000 professors and associate professors.
Its total enrollment of students amounts to 35,929, of which 1,564 are international students. There are 16,802 undergraduates, and 17,563 masters and Ph.D. candidates. After more than a century of operation, Jiao Tong University has inherited the old tradition of "high starting points, solid foundation, strict requirements and extensive practice." Students from SJTU have won top prizes in various competitions, including ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, International Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Electronics Design Contests. Famous alumni include Jiang Zemin, Lu Dingyi, Ding Guangen, Wang Daohan, Qian Xuesen, Wu Wenjun, Zou Taofen, Mao Yisheng, Cai Er, Huang Yanpei, Shao Lizi, Wang An and many more. More than 200 of the academics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering are alumni of Jiao Tong University.

- Building 12: six-storey with A, B, and C three suites on each floor; each suite shares a bathroom and a shower; each room is furnished with a single bed, bedside cabinets, desks, chairs, small bookcase, wardrobe, refrigerators, air conditioners and Internet access, etc.; per floor has a public kitchen; there is a laundry room with washing machines, dryers and water heaters on the first floor.
- Building 51: six-storey with two units in the east and west on each floor; each unit has two suites; each suites have four rooms and one hall which is furnished with a bookshelf, desks, shoes boxes, etc.; there is public bathroom and shower; each room is furnished with a single bed, bedside cabinet, desk, chair, wardrobe, refrigerator, air-conditioning and Internet access; on the first floor, there is a public kitchen, two reading rooms and a laundry room with washing machine, dryers and electric water heaters on the west unit.

Scholarship
In order to develop outstanding international talent and improve the perception of China's higher education, under the mandate of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is opening application for full-time postgraduate studies under the 2012 Chinese Government Scholarship Program.
In order to facilitate the implementation of the Chinese Government Scholarship, the following detailed implementation has been issued in accordance with the "Chinese Government Scholarship Application Method".
- Scholarship Availability: 25
- Application Deadline: March 15, 2012
- Qualifications for Scholarship Application:
- Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health;
- Applicants should be graduates of well-known overseas or Chinese universities, or those universities that have established exchange programs with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Applicants should have excellent academic performance; or should be a student from overseas university recommended by a Shanghai Jiao Tong University professor;
- Applicants should not be a student of Chinese University (except for those who graduated from Chinese university for one year or longer)
- Education background and age limit:
- Applicants for master's degree studies must have bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35;
- Applicants for doctoral degree studies must have master's degree and be under the age of 40;
- Applicants should not be holding scholarship of any other categories.
- Categories of Applicants and Duration of Scholarship:
- Master's Degree Students, 2-3 academic years
- Doctoral Degree Students, 3-4 academic years
- The instruction language could be either Chinese or English. Applicants who apply for courses instructed in Chinese are required to take one year Chinese language course prior to the academic study if their Chinese is not qualified. Only by passing the examinations after the Chinese language course, could they start their academic studies.
- Scholarship students should complete their study within the due time; scholarship duration specified in the admission notice CAN NOT be extended in principle.
- The scholarship quota is only for academic year 2012/2013, and it cannot span two academic years.
- Values of Scholarship:
- Students are exempt from tuition fee, fee for learning materials and fee for dormitory on campus;
- A living stipend is provided(Master's degree students 1700RMB/month, Doctoral degree students 2000RMB/month);
- New arrival one time set up subsidy 1500RMB/person;
- To provide out-patient medical fees and Chinese Government Scholarship Foreign Students Medical Insurance 600RMB/person/year.
