University Profile
Founded in 1952, Shanghai Finance University (SHFU) is a full-time state-owned academic institution. The university has a very sound and comprehensive subject structures covering art, law, science and engineering with emphasis put on economics and management and finance taken as its core. SHFU has been committed to developing various skills required by China's economic and finance industries during the past few decades and as a result, SHFU is praised as a "Cradle of Future Financial Experts".
Situated in Pudong New District, SHFU is adjacent to many multinational corporations and several universities. It has a total area of more than 440,000 square meters and a construction area of 190,000 square meters. Its modern facilities include a library, multimedia computer rooms, educational training centers and campus-wide internet.
At present, SHFU has nine schools and five departments, offering 24 majors. The students are from 23 provinces and municipalities of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. SHFU also has the qualification to enroll foreign students. At present the university has more than 8000 full-time students and a faculty of 564. 161 teachers have senior professional titles and three are entitled to State Special Allowance by the State Council.
Meanwhile, SHFU insists on internationalized schooling and attaches great importance to developing cooperation and exchange with overseas universities. It has successively established relationships with universities and organizations in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Denmark, Switzerland, and Finland.
In addition, SHFU enjoys favorable connections with financial institutions in China and has gained a lot of support from the administrative departments of education at various levels, the central bank and other financial institutions. Meanwhile, SHFU has played a role in the development of China's economics and financial fields, especially in developing Shanghai into an international financial center.
Moreover, SHFU academic structure consists of six fields including economics, management, literature, law, science and engineering; at the same time these areas of study have taken its initial shape with finance, insurance, international economics and trade as the core subjects while being supported by the others. Currently, SHFU has one national level selected course, one national level development site for special disciplines, four municipal level undergraduate higher education bases, nine municipal level selected courses, one key discipline of Shanghai Education Commission, six municipal level teaching achievements, one municipal level award-winning teaching team and one municipal level famous teacher.
Furthermore, SHFU is a pioneering university exploring a new educational method to combine sports with teaching. SHFU's fencing team has achieved impressive results in different kinds of university fencing competitions at home and abroad.
Under the university motto "Display honesty and cultivate virtue, foster ambition and contribute to society", SHFU has set down the guideline of "being centered on the undergraduate study, teaching, quality and characteristics" and has been devoted to developing students with highly improved inter-disciplinary academic skills, practical abilities and creativity and an international mind.

1. Insurance
All International Students must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students are required to enroll in Ministry of Education Of China's Ping'an Insurance special for foreign students. Recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship will have their health plan prepared/purchased by the government. Students who are not medically insured and/ failed to provide the university with the required supporting insurance documents are not allowed to register.
Compulsory: Students must pay for China's Ping'an Insurance upon arrival: Approximately 400 RMB per term, approximately 600 RMB per academic year, based on 2007-08 fees.

3. Emergency/Security Services
Shanghai is a relatively a safe city and Shanghai Finance University is a secure and well-guarded campus. Nevertheless, students are encouraged to take some safety precautions. It is not advisable for students to carry their passport and large sums of money with them at all times. When you are off campus, your Student ID Card will be sufficient enough to verify your identity.

4. Housing
Students who live on campus hotel must abide by the rules and regulations of their residence. Students may also choose to live off campus under the condition that they must register themselves at the police station of their residential area and obtain Accommodation Certificate from the local police station within 3 days. If you are living off campus, do ensure that your rental contract with you landlord is legitimate and reliable.
Students who changed their address and contact information while they are studying at Shanghai Finance University must inform the Division for International Students Office of their new and recent address, telephone number and email. It is important for the Division for International Students' Office to be able to contact its students because it often sends out important notifications to them. The Division of International Students' Office maintains a strict policy of keeping all contact information confidential. The Division of International Students' Office also provides students with information regarding off-campus housing. Please consult the staff at the office if you wish for such assistance. At the same time, you may also search for off campus housing from the real estate agencies around Min Yao Road and/ look up the classifieds or advertisements in the foreign newspapers (which can be purchased from foreign restaurants). The rates for off-campus housing differ according to the size and the facilities of the residence. The general estimate for off-campus rental/month is at least 1,500 RMB.

6. Banks and Foreign Currency Exchange
Ren Min Bi (RMB) is the sole legal tender of China. The unit used for the RMB is Yuan and it has the smaller denominations of Jiao and Fen (1 Yuan = 10 Jiao = 100 Fen). RMB is issued in both note and coin forms. The paper notes come in the denominations of 100 Yuan, 50 Yuan, 20 Yuan, 10 Yuan, 5 Yuan, 1 Yuan, 5 Jiao and 1 Jiao; and the denominations for coins are 1 Yuan, 5 Jiao, 1 Jiao.
Currency Exchange:
For your own safety, do not exchange money on the streets for this an illegal act and you risk getting conned. Students may convert the following foreign currency - Pound Sterling, Hong Kong Dollar, American Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen, Canadian Dollar and Australian Dollar –into RMB at the banks in Shanghai.
Students can also withdraw money in RMB from certain ATM machines that accept the foreign credit cards of:

- VISA Card
If you are a holder of a credit card that is a CIRRUS or Plus network service provider, you can withdraw RMB-cash from any ATM machine belonging to the Bank of China. Keep in mind that you have to pay a transaction fee every time when you withdraw the money. Traveler checks are accepted by many banks if it's denomination is in USD, however, keep in mind that it takes more than 40 working days for the checks to be processed.

Students may exchange money and open their saving/checking accounts at both of the above banks. You are required to present your passport or your Residence Permit to the bank staffs when opening a bank account/exchanging foreign currency. Students may also deposit foreign currencies (Pound Sterling, Hong Kong Dollar, American Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen, Canadian Dollar and Australian Dollar) directly into their saving/checking account in the above banks. 8. Holidays
All International Students are to enjoy the same school holidays as the Chinese Students. The university does not schedule any school breaks for foreign holidays/celebrations. Students may find the university's holiday schedule in the academic calendar. 9. Travel in China
When you are traveling in China, you must bring along with you your passport and take care of your belongings. Your travel destination must be one that is open to visitors/foreigners. You must not enter restricted areas/regions that are prohibited to visitors/foreigners without obtaining prior approval from the Chinese authorities. Otherwise, you will face persecution by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China. Students who need to enter the restricted areas/regions for research purposes must apply for the appropriate authorization in order to set foot into these places. 10. Weather in Shanghai
Shanghai has four distinct seasons: temperate spring, rainy summer, clear autumn, and cold and wet winter. The best seasons to travel in Shanghai are during spring and autumn, particularly in the months of April, May, September and October. Autumn is considered to be the best season to visit Shanghai, as the skies are clear and the weather is very comfortable. The average temperature throughout the year is 15°C with the coldest month in January (coldest temperature: -1°C) and the warmest month in July (warmest temperature: 38°C). The seasons of spring and autumn are shorter than summer and winter.

Applicants must hold a high school diploma, be in good health and aged 18 or above. Chinese Language requirement is HSK level 5 or above. If the applicants are not proficient enough in Chinese to follow the program, a one-year Chinese course can be arranged.

Undergraduate Programs
All SHFU's undergraduate degree programs are open to international students, and its international economics and trade, finance and Accounting can be offered both in Chinese and in English, so those who have difficulty getting Chinese degrees can also study in English for degrees.

Non-degree Chinese Program
SHFU has Chinese language program, which is open to students from beginning to advanced levels of Chinese. It offers a variety of courses including Chinese language, Chinese culture, and Chinese calligraphy. Class sizes are very small and interactive. Basic Chinese, Spoken Chinese, Listening Comprehension, Newspaper Reading, Writing, Business Chinese, Chinese History and Culture, Extracurricular Activities etc. Also available are the following courses such as Chinese Calligraphy, Qigong, Chinese Cuisine etc.
Remark Diploma and transcript should be in Chinese or English. Other versions need to be translated into Chinese or English and should be notarized.
