A. Semester
The school year can be divided into three semesters. The summer semester commences from early September and ends at the end of September. The autumn semester begins from early October and ends at the end of January the following year, and then the winter vacation follows. The spring semester starts in the middle of February and ends in earl July, and then the summer vacation starts.
B. Teaching
The teaching lasts 4 weeks for the first semester in which students may have lecturers or do internships, 16 weeks for the second and third semester in which students study all courses. Besides, there are 2 weeks suspended before the end of second and third semesters during which students can make preparation for final examinations.
C. Credits Requirements
The total number of credits for students of science and engineering is 170 or so (the number of credits for theoretical subjects is about 140 and about 30 for practice). The total number of credits for students of arts, economics and management is 160. Each student is required to complete at least 20 credits in a semester.

A. Introduction
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1993, and has made remarkable progress since then. The department now offers 30-40 graduate courses in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Bridge & Tunnel Engineering, and Disaster Prevention & Reduction Engineering. It has a well-qualified and learned tutor team of advisors. They are professors, more than 80% of them with a doctor’s degree. The faculty is engaged in the research of four major areas: Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, and Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering. The department has well-qualified faculty and experienced staff supported by well-equipped laboratories, computing facilities and skilled technical staff.

It is one of the National “985 Project” and “211 Project” key universities. It is famous for “Sanhang” disciplines (i.e., aeronautics, astronautics, marine science and technology). TThe university provides extensive guidance, support, as well as the opportunity for internships. The department has established firm cooperation with several construction enterprises (e.g., China State Construction, Shaanxi Construction Engineering Group Cooperation Limited, Xi’an Construction Engineering, DAFANG Group) and construction design institutes (e.g., China Northwest Architecture Design and Research Institute CO. LTD, Northwest Engineering Cooperation Limited, Northwest Research Institute of Engineering Investigation and Design). Moreover, the laboratories and the department also provide internships and part-time jobs. After finishing studies, students can have multiple options for their careers. They can find industrial jobs after graduation. The employment rate of civil engineering was 100% in the past three years. Finding a job for a civil engineer is never a problem in China.
Bachelor Degree:
Program Description---
A. Core Courses: Students need to gain at least 143 credits in four years to obtain the Bachelor degree of Engineering. The courses are divided into compulsory courses (e.g., Calculus, Linear Algebra, College Physics, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Mechanical Mapping, P.E., Theoretical Mechanical, Mechanics of Material, Structure Mechanics, Building Materials, Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Design of Concrete Structure and Masonry Structure, Design of Steel Structure, Basic Components and Principles of Concrete) and optional courses (e.g. Chinese language, Chinese Civilization, Frontier of Civil Engineering, General Introduction to Intelligent Transportation System).
B. Main Experiments
The university provides comprehensive practices to improve students’ hands-on ability. For example, Practice of Metal Processing Technology, College Computer Experiment, Programming Experiment, Physical Experiment, Engineering Mechanics Experiment, Construction Building Material Test, Geotechnical Laboratory Test, and Structure Experiment.
C. Main Practices
Before learning the major related courses (at the end of the second year), students have chances to visit construction sites and communicate with engineers in form of Cognition Practice and Production Practice. These valuable experiences will help them establish intuition concepts efficiently.
