Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen (traditional Chinese: 精武風雲-陳真; simplified Chinese: 精武风云-陈真) is a 2010 Hong Kong martial arts action film directed by Andrew Lau. The film is a continuation of the 1995 television series Fist of Fury, with Donnie Yen reprising his role as Chen Zhen, a role made famous by Bruce Lee in the 1972 film Fist of Fury. Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen is set during the Second Sino-Japanese War in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, seven years after the events of the series. Principal photography for the film began in November 2009 and ended in early February 2010; filming took place in Shanghai. The film was shown out of competition during the opening night of the 67th Venice International Film Festival, and 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was released theatrically in Hong Kong on 23 September 2010.


Plot

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen will be set in Japanese-occupied Shanghai during the Second Sino-Japanese War, seven years after the apparent death of Chen Zhen, who was shot after avenging his teacher (Huo Yuanjia) in Fist of Fury. A mysterious stranger arrives from overseas and befriends a local triad boss. That man is Chen Zhen in disguise, who intends to infiltrate the mob when they form an alliance with the Japanese. Disguising himself as a masked fighter(based on the Green Hornet) by night, Chen intends to take out everyone involved as well as get his hands on an assassination list prepared by the Japanese.

Production

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen is a continuation of the 1995 television series Fist of Fury, with Donnie Yen reprising his role as Chen Zhen. Yen will also serve as the film's fight choreographer. The film will be directed by Andrew Lau, who will also co-produce the film and serve as a cinematographer alongside his frequent partner Ng Man-Ching; Gordon Chan will co-write and co-produce the film; John Chong will serve as an executive producer. The film is a co-production between Hong Kong film distributor Media Asia Films, Lau's production company Basic Pictures, and Chinese film producer Enlight Pictures.


Development

In February 2007, Gordon Chan announced to plans to make a follow-up feature film to the 1995 television series Fist of Fury. Chan announced that Donnie Yen would reprise his role, with Zhang Ziyi as a possible female lead. A script for the film was being written and filming was reportedly planned to begin in mid-2007.On 13 March 2008, Enlight Pictures announced that it would co-produce the film, while the film's screenplay was being re-written.


Casting

On 29 October 2009, Anthony Wong was announced to be a part of the supporting cast.Prior to principal photography, the supporting cast members for the film was announced. Zhou Yang and Shu Qi will play two women are competitively vieing for Chen Zhen's affection; Huang Bo will play an underdog fighter; Anthony Wong plays a local crime boss.


Filming

Principal photography for Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen began on 15 November 2009, following a press conference attended by the cast and crew; filming took place in Shanghai,and concluded in early February.


Release

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen was released theatrically in Hong Kong on 23 September 2010.It was further announced that the film will be released to theaters in the United States in early 2011.
