Qingming Festival

Qingming is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on a certain day in early April. The exact date varies from year to year in the Gregorian calendar because Qingming follows the lunar Chinese calendar.This year, it falls on April 4.

Literally, the two Chinese characters of the name Qingming mean “clear” (QING) and “bright” (MING). Probably the two words find their origins in the weather of the season. The festival is marked in early spring. Around this time of year, winter is left behind and it is getting warmer and warmer. Plants are turning green, air is fresh and it is a season of those spring drizzles, which arouse romance and melancholy.Chinese people take Qingming as the mark for seeding.

As a state advocating filial piety, people always bring a bunch of flower to their deceased families' or friends' tombs on this day. In some countrysides, the villager bring dishes to serve the tombs. As to the alive themselves, they make "Qingmingguo", a green cake with brown sugar or Chinese dishes inside made from rice and wormwood.
