Zhejiang Sci-Tech University is a key provincial university in Zhejiang province, well-known for its unique characteristics and advantages.  While engineering subjects are the University’s main focus, the school provides a comprehensive academic education, covering the fields of natural sciences, engineering, humanities, economics, management, law and education.  In April 1999, upon receiving approval from the Ministry of Education, the school changed its name from Zhejiang Institute of Silk Textiles to Zhejiang Institute of Science and Technology. In May 2004, upon approval of the Ministry of Education, the name was further changed to its current name, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University.

    The school’s history can be traced back to the Sericulture Academy established in 1897, which was one of the earliest western-style educational institutions in China.  The school achieved tremendous progress in the development of education in China, including such milestones as:

    • 1959, initiated undergraduate education program

    • 1979, initiated postgraduate education program

    • 1983, authorized to award masters degrees

    • 1993, authorized to accredit associate professorships

    • 1995, initiated doctoral education program in partnership with Zhejiang University

    • 1995, authorized to enroll international students and students from Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan

    • 2000, authorized to award master’s degrees to on-the-job applicants lacking the required diploma education but passing academic assessment

    • 2002, authorized to award masters degrees in engineering

    • 2006, authorized to award doctoral degrees

    • 2006, authorized to award master’s degrees to on-the-job college teacher applicants

    • 2006, authorized to accredit professorships

    Today, the University has established a comprehensive and multilevel schooling configuration covering undergraduate education, postgraduate education, international student education, Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run education and adult continuing education.

    Zhejiang Sci-Tech University has four campuses, covering a total area of more than 346 acres, or 140 hectares.  The University now has a total of 17 schools (including teaching departments) and one independent institute.  Currently, there are 52 undergraduate majors, of which, 15 are provincial key majors (inclusive of those under construction) and 7 enjoy the status of “major with distinct characteristics” at national/ministerial levels.  The University has two doctoral programs, 30 masters degrees programs including four ‘category one’ subjects, 10 masters degrees program of engineering, and 30 masters degree programs offered to on-the-job college teacher applicants.  At present, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University has roughly 26,000 full time students enrolled, of which around 1,900 are postgraduate students.

    Zhejiang Sci-Tech University’s faculty is highly talented and experienced.  There are nearly 1,800 teachers and support staff altogether, more than 600 of them have professional titles at associate level or above, of which more than 180 have senior professional titles.  Among the faculty, there is one Innovative Research Team supported by the Ministry of Education, six members selected to the National BaiQianWan Intelligence Recognition Program, four members included in the New Century Excellence Support Program led by the Ministry of Education, in addition, 39 professors are qualified to tutor doctoral students, 44 teachers are financially supported by the provincial New Century 151 Talent Program, 32 teachers receive government special allowance financed by the China State Council. Besides, the University has also engaged more than 170 reknowned scholars and experts to act as co-professors, visiting professors, and etc.

    Focusing on achieving academic development and promoting scientific research, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University now has four subjects recognized as provincial “subjects of utmost importance”, eight subjects recognized as provincial and ministerial key subjects, one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, one engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, 3 provincial key laboratories, and 17 provincial and ministerial research platforms.  Over the past five years, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University has completed a series of national and provincial-level scientific and research programs and has won more than 170 awards, including six National Awards for Technological Invention, two National Awards for Science and Technology Progress, one Lu Xun Literature Award, and more than 80 provincial awards.  Zhejiang Sci-Tech University persists in applying science to economical and social construction, and has established stable scientific cooperation relations with hundreds of enterprises.

    Zhejiang Sci-Tech University cherishes its motto of “virtue, vision, erudition and action”, fully displaying the spirit of “seeking knowledge and truth, pursuing innovation and creation” established a century ago in an ethos of “seek truth, cherish honesty”.  The school focuses on student education and teaching activities, and was awarded “excellence” in the undergraduate student education assessment given by the Ministry of Education in 2004.  The University boasts three National Top-quality Courses, two National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and has won many national and provincial awards for teaching achievements.
